Desktop choice

Only having used Gnome, and not knowing about Xorg will this give me a basic desktop sorry for the dumb Question or should I just get gnome/kde "familiar" I would like something different

Hi,

Whether you want to use gnome/KDE/Xfce/fluxbox/..., you do need to install xorg. Xorg is your X Window System Environment, on top of that you can install a Window manager or Desktop environment. Which one is a personal choice.

Xorg does come with twm, maybe too minimalistic for some, but this one is present by default.

BTW: Be prepared for a long build if you choose either Gnome or KDE (full build).

Hope this helps.

You should check out xfce :)

Hi,

Xfce is nice, but it is not part of BLFS. You do need to be a bit creative if you want to install Xfce and there are no (blfs related) build instructions to my knowledge.

It is doable: I run Xfce on top of xorg (all build from scratch).

Oh I know, I did it a while back. I use gnome on my laptop, and it suites me well for the time being. I still love xfce though :)
