Customizing LibreElec

Hi, I am very interested in customizing the LibreElec OS for my own personal use obviously, my question is how can I get https://github.com/LibreELEC/LibreELEC.tv into something that I can modify the source code of then build into a bootable .img file? I have programming experience so I can work that side of things out. I just need to know how to start out! Thanks in advance!

The link you provided has a 'Clone/Download' option. Why not grab a copy and do your clever stuff there?

What kind of customizing do you want to do? Adding software can be done by expanding the existing project. It uses .mk scripts to build software packages, you can change configure options and rebuild software once you have it running.
