coreutils patch says it found only garbage

This is what I get when I run the path for coreutils-6.12.old in section 5.17.1. Installation of Coreutils

coreutils-6.12$ patch -Np1 -i coreutils-6.12-old_build_kernel-1.patch
patch: **** Only garbage was found in the patch input.
The LFS manual says that it is a needed patch in section 3.3. How critical is this patch. I'm using linux-2.6.28.5

'linux-2.6.28.5' isn't old.

I understand that. But I am barely into this build and wanted to make sure this wouldn't bite me later on. This is my first try at lfs so when the book says required, I just wanted to verify.
Thank you.

This patch is not required for your kernel. But I thing maybe you made a typo when writing that line like
patch -np1 ....
or
patch -Np0 ....
or anything like that. When you specify wrong patch format, only garbage is found inside. I personally never had such problem with this patch.
