Hi there, I have my last kernel source tree that I built (plus whatever action did the NVidia installer on that three when I installed the nvidia module)

I forgot to compile coretemp as a module, do I need to recompile the whole kernel or is there any safe way of compiling just that module?

Now that I'm asking this, is there any module for which the above question would be answered by "you can just compile that module"?


Edit: actually what I meant to ask, if I'm forced to recompile the kernel to add coretemp, can I just move the nvidia module and relink? or should I rerun the installer. I'm assuming that just moving and running ldconfig should be fine right?

lol, I hate when I forget to include a module. Happens almost every time too.

Not sure if this is "proper" but I always just go back into menuconfig, add whatever I forgot then do a make modules; make modules_install. I'm pretty sure it skips everything that's already compiled making it run much faster.

You'll have to re-run the nvidia installer again though because of the way it's linked or installed (at least I always have to).
The whole process seems to be much faster then a normal re-compile and I've never had any problems doing it this way.


Another approach would be running make modules SUBDIRS=drivers/hwmon then copying drivers/hwmon/coretemp.ko to your modules directory should also work and even better wouldn't require your nvidia drivers to be re-installed

Making the kernel again has almost no effect on compile time, this is because nothing in the core of the kernel has changed so make won't overwrite data if it doesn't have to. since you are only adding modules or subtracting modules it only will build the modules anyways.

Thanks, I had already compiled coretemp, but then it turned out I needed another module from hwmon in 2.6.30 to check my fan speeds
