i know this might seem like a stupid question which it is.. but i can't seem to figure out how to build LFS 7.5 using salix-liveCD-xcfe-13.37 on an external HDD.. i mean when i use cfdisk i can see the HDD that is in my laptop but i can't see the external hdd.. thanks oh and is it a good idea to build the entire LFS on a laptop...
As far a building with an external hdd, I see no problems. Build speed may be slower, especially depending on the connection (usb2.0, usb3.0, {,e}sata). Wouldn't stop me if that was what I had availale.
The laptop sounds like it should be fine, maybe not the fastest, but at least it's multicore. Sounds like a viable machine to me.
Well, just based on specs you've listed, the 2 more cores of the i5 and 2 more GB of ram would seem to point to the laptop being better. While the laptop has a slower freq, I would think that the added cores and memory to be more help for building. But another thing to consider is that desktops usually have better air flow and better heat displacement than laptops. Compiling eats up a lot of cycles, hence generates plenty of heat. So, basically, I'm not willing to commit to saying that one is better than the other. You'll have to decide. I can't be sure one way or the other... I also can't guarantee that building lfs on one of those machines won't break it. I simply can't know the machine well enough, but can only guess. Which machine can you afford to break? I wish I could help more, but quite frankly, I consider building software to be a mild form of stress test on a machine. I can't be the one to say, "use that one", then it pops a capacitor and I'm the bad guy.
