I just completed my LFS 7.4 build on VMWare, this is not an error, the graphic configuration interface needed bigger screen to show the whole graphical configuration windows, you just need to resize your VMware windows or better just go full screen then your make menuconfig will work as normal, unfortunately my LFS build would not boot from VMware, I boot it from VirtualBox instead without any modification, the only problem now is that the disk I use to build LFS 7.4 would not boot by itself I have to boot it from the host grub
