after the installation from x.org

how to give my screen a pretty looking without to decide which kind of high performance window manager i will use later?

I actually use twm, it is going well (it was not easy to find a good template for .twmrc, but I did found one and it is working well), but I don't see how to put a background picture on the screen!

Same for a splash picture for grub.

my grub.cfg contains the line

background_image /boot/background.jpg

uncommented but nothing appears (my screen is a digital display 1920 x 1080 pixels)
