[CLFS] Can't run "make menuconfig"

I've been working on CLFS -- version 1.0.0-x86_64-Multilib -- for a couple of days and it's been going well.

Today I got to the point of installing the kernel (sec. 12.3.1 of CLFS book), and I'm coming up with this error when I run "make menuconfig":

Code:
root:/sources/linux-2.6.17.13# make menuconfig
  HOSTCC scripts/basic/fixdep
gcc: error trying to exec 'as': execvp: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [scripts/basic/fixdep] Error 1
make: *** [scripts_basic] Error 2
Any advice, anyone? Let me know if other info is needed.

This is the stock 2.6.17.13 kernel, of course.

Thank you.

I'm guessing here. as is part of binutils and exec cannot find it. So, where is it?

What does "which as" produce. Maybe something went wrong when you compiled binutils and it failed to install. (Maybe you forgot to run make install ...). It's possible that throughout chapter 6 you have been using the toolchain "as", and usually at this point the toolchain has been removed, which is why you are only getting the error now.

If this is the case I am not sure how one would recover from this... but this is only wild speculation anyway.
