Question whether Volume Group is active or not ?

Hi All,

I am using RHEL5 on x86.
Well I was just learning LVMs from here http://tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/

I have a query, is there someway out to find out whether a Volume Group (VG) is active or not ? Any configuration files which vgchange reads ?

Also, as stated here http://tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/activatevgs.html
after running vgchange -an ,I can not access my LVs and VGs. Also, I was able to run vgextend and vgreduce succesfully.

Please advice.

Thanks in adv.
VIKAS

But what I found I can still create, reduce, modify LVs. Also

vgchange -ay | -an is for making the logical volumes active/inactive for i/o operations.
if you want to check which is active, you can run the command

lvs

if any logical volume has an "a" in its attributes, VG and LV is active.

if you ran vgchange -an on a VG, you can still do LVM operations on a
logical volume but no I/O operations (ie mounting it for r/w).

hth.
