Stuck booting to and switching to init 5 on OEL 6.5

Hi All,
I have two servers that have not been rebooted in over a year. When I rebooted them, the console shows the normal startup gibberish until right before launching the GUI. The last entry on my screen shows:
Starting ATD: OK

If I <CTRL><ALT>F2 and start another session with just the terminal or ssh in, all looks normal. I can even successfully run startx but my initial session will stay at that screen.

If I boot into or switch to init 3, no issues. I can then startx without a hitch. Running init 5 at this point results in:
starting postreserve:
Retrigger Failed udev events: OK

And then it will stay there until I press Enter.

I'm lost and frustrated at this point.

So far, I've tried upgrading VMware tools and "X Window System" thinking there was a driver issue but that did not help.
Please forgive any ignorance, this is my first forum post and I have only a little over a year of Linux experience.
Thanks in advance!

OS: OEL 6.5 64 bit
VMware Virtual Machine

Folder /var/log contains various log files, some of which may hold more information about the problem.
Look especially at dmesg, messages, and syslog.
You will have to view the last two as root user.

In some of the other distributions, there was a similar issue and it was suggested to remove/rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

I am not sure of the breaking point, but there was also an issue with certain udev versions if you added a certain amount of storage. Although in that case, you could not even get to a command prompt unless you completely powered the server down and rebooted, which worked most of the time.
