Server not booting - Segmentation fault

Hi,

I recently got my Red Hat Enterprise loaded with Oracle 10g to work. It is set up on a HP DL380 server. Everything was working fine till I tried to access the server and I was denied access. The root password was not working and I had to reboot. The system did not not start after that. I keep getting stuck at the 'Setting up hostname ....' and it states '[FAILED]'. Before that, there is a line '/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: line 89: 49 Segmentation fault umount /initrd'. I don't understand this but obviously somethings wrong. I've let the system run overnight to see if maybe the process is just taking it's time to start but it's still stuck at that point.

I am unable to boot up with the rescue cd as the server does not recognise my USB drive. I'm not sure if it is supposed to recognise a drive.

I'm new to this so any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Try this. Restart and when you get to the boot: prompt type:

linux single

Tell me if it boots into single user mode.

Oh, I forgot, you may need to press 'a' twice at the grub boot loader menu in order to type 'single' at the end of the kernel loading stanza.

i Think this is something related to memory addressing .... anyway to trouble shoot u may have to boot into single user mode ...

I've done this but the system still does not boot. It still hangs at Setting up hostname....

UPDATE:
I managed to boot up using Knoppix 5.0. Apparently the copy of images burnt to the CD were not proper so it did not boot up. I can now boot up but am unable to mount the hard drive. How can i do this, backup and check for any configuration faults that are leading to this problem?
