Some of our production applications & DBs are on redhat enterprise linux and company is planning to move on to oracle enterprise linux. Is there anyway we can migrate on same server without loosing application data to save infrastructure cost ? or is it possible only with complete wipe n build on same server or new OEL build on new server altogether and then port application & DB from RHL to OEL ?
Any inputs is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
What is your application to migrate? Is it versions same? e.g RHEL 5.6 to OL 5.6
Definitely, OL is just rebranding of RHEL. It is binary compatible. Generally, it should not have big problem
you can double check your source RHEL and destination OL packages using rpm
rpm -q httpd
even
rpm -qi httpd

The best people to ask would be RedHat and Oracle. You're using commercial, pay-for products, and (since you're paying), have access to their tech support folks.

You're most likely going to be backing up important configurations and data, installing OEL, and then restoring needed files (and troubleshooting why things aren't working; there are subtle differences in OEL - even kernel level - that may be gotchas).
If you want to explore a (potentially) more seamless upgrade path, I agree with TB0ne: utilize the vendor support you are paying for.
As per last 2 posts; according to what I've read, OEL is not a simple rebranding (unlike eg Centos). Oracle do in fact do some customisation, especially the kernel.
Backup, wipe & start over... Actually of course, get a new machine and test on that; anomie is right that there will almost definitely be issues...
