One of my RHEL4 servers will not allow me to login remotely using ssh.
I am prompted to enter username then password as normal but then the system replies with "Access denied" and asks for password again.
I have system access via remote console port (HP iLO on a blade server) and have reset the user password and proved login works from console.
I have also enabled remote login of root (in /etc/ssh/sshd_config) exactly the same as another system (which works perfectly) but still no remote login.
I would consider myself still as a linux novice for system administration and apologise if the answer is an obvious one.

Thanks and regards, Andy
anything in /etc/security/access.conf?
can you dump the output of /var/log/secure (from the server?)
/etc/security/access.conf has nothing in it except standard text commented out.
I can't seem to dump the log file but have copied the last few entries below, which I think shows nothing?
Jan 8 16:27:40 ftip_viias sshd[7854]: Recieved signal 15; terminating.
Jan 8 16:27:40 ftip_viias sshd[10770]: Server listening on :: port 22.
Jan 8 16:27:40 ftip_viias sshd[10770]: error: Bind to port 22 on 0.0.0.0 failed: Address already in use.
This output was caused by me restaring the sshd process.
Is the last entry significant?
Andy
Just thought I'd compare to another working server and it seems as though on the good server logging of good/bad attempts works in /var/log/secure but on the problem server bad logins are not being logged.
/etc/security/access.conf is identical.
false alarm - really sorry.
One of the developers has migrated 1 server onto another and changed IP addresses so the box I thought I was logging onto is a different one!!
Everything works as expected now.
Again sorry for this - at least I know I wasn;t going mad on config!
Andy
