Rhel 5.0 Sata Drivers..!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 

Has anyone of you tried to install the Red hat enterprise 5 on a system that has the VIA VT8237S SATA II SouthBridge chipset??????????????

I have a big problem on a distribution that can call itself to be the best...!!!!(RED HAT) .I think not....This chipset is not new and the technology is old on SATA II.Do not tell me that I am angry , but I cannot go back to the IDE disk drives you know , as Red Hat want's.

WHERE IS THE COMMUNITY TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.!!!Even windows xp has this driver on the pre-installed version of them....I very disappointed and especially from Red Hat.:cry::(:(

I do not know what to say anymore...I think that that is the reason that a lot of people and companies DO NOT install any of the linux distributions anymore because they do not have any support at all...!!!

I will go back to windows Server Systems after 4 years of operating/installing linux on server and pc. :confused::confused:

I cannot wait for the software to support the hardware..!!!!
I am also very angry because I have waisted my time on a OS (linux) which is on a "baby" stage yet.I am wandering what t' fu**k the community of Red Hat is doing on the issue about SATA Hard disk drivers installation tasks???????? I wonder after so MANY complains from the users and admins of Red Hat....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that Microsoft is doing a great job on this field and do not be suprised if one day it will buy all the software and every OS on the planet.Open source my as*** . And do not dare to say that Fedora Core has already this driver...!!!????? Tell this to a company that has 45 Servers with 2 SAN SYSTEMS and 1000 of users to go to Fedora Core 4.!!!!!

I am very sory to say these thinks but i am trying to find a solution to my problem and nobody knows when the community or the teams of the redHat or other distribution woke up one day and release the driver....

do you know WHY xp has the drivers?? because VIA work directly with Microsoft to make that the case. They would however probably have had nothing to do with any support for their own hardware within Linux or there are licensing issues surrounding the ability to incorporate the drivers that they may have provided for Linux, again something. you need to actually put the slightest bit of effort into understand the issues at stake, rather than immaturely jumping on an end result with no hint of context.

you have also used up your allocation of exclamation marks for 2 years... not a good way to be taken seriously.

When you have a production line my friend on your head...you will be the same and even more aggressive than I am...
And believe me that the exclamation marks are quite a few for what I had happend and of course when you are on a production line with Blade Servers to install then I would be more concerned to hear your solution than to criticize my exclamations.

One more thing, what you have told me is not an answer for an Admin of a big company.If you know what I mean...
There is only one rule in big environment : "if you are not a part of a solution , you are a part of a problem"
Try to learn the above and you will take me very seriously .

Yes my friend I have already done this...!!

The problem is that I found in the above link the drivers for Red Hat 9.0 but they DO NOT work on Enterprise version..!!
Are they for laughing or not???

While doing my best to keep the peace in what looks like a heated discussion may I remind you that Redhat does produce a supported hardware list for entirely this reason - https://hardware.redhat.com/ - this is provided to assure customers and end users of the solidity of their product within a fully tested scope of hardware.

While I also appreciate this is kind of a narrow scope, we are often very lucky and supported hardware often well surpasses our expectations - however on the other hand we also have to accept that sometimes hardware support outside of certification can be problematic and thus I would suggest anything that falls outside of that would require vigorous testing via the individual who must take responsibility for further installation outside of the O/S manufactures recommendations.

Yes that's very well put. So many users, as we're seeing here, have so base an understanding of the issues at stake that their own ignorance puts Linux in a bad light for wholly invalid reasons. I think many people would benefit from being grateful that what does work works, rather than complaining about what doesn't for the wrong reasons.

Have you tried any of the Fedora drivers? I used to manage a few CentOS 4.X servers and the few times that I did need packages that weren't in the CentOS repositories I usually had pretty good luck with the Fedora packages.

I am going to say something to my friends acid_kewpie & Sm1ler this: " I did not ask something which is very hard to find , I asked for the new technology of SATA II ...!!If the software or the community thinks that I am having my ignorance for this ...then what I can SAY else..!!!If RED HAT cannot follow the new technology is useless as a software because it cannot support a very range of SERVERS now days..!!!As have told you before I did not have any problem with Red Hat but I DO HAVE with their support and how fast they are on supporting new hardware...This is were the <<money>> is and this is were the users and especially admins worth to try this software.I have been using Red Hat on Server and SAN Systems for over 5 Years and sure know what I am talking about...Maybe you should see your ignorance on RED HAT because if you install a system 5 times doesen't give you the right to know what is going one with this software.THE BIG PROBLEM IS TO SUPPORT on big companies."

My friend msound I have tried Fedora and worked ,of course I have installed the system on a VMWARE SERVER to simulate the conditions at my company.It worked but the problem is how to migrate from RED HAT to FEDORA without any problem....!!!
I know that fedora is RED HAT based but how will I migrate my 5 SAN systems without my users will understand a think????
Do not forget to mention my 45 SERVERS and other 5 Blades Servers witch they are waitting to do something about them.( SATA II technology...).
My 45 Servers are already running RED HAT 4 and a lot of other production applications witch I do not know If they will be running on Fedora..!!!!
I cannot have different operating systems on Blades Server...You know what I mean?????!!!

Before you make a big mistake, do some research. Fedora is not suitable for a production envionment fo a number of reasons, not least that support for Fedora releases only lasts 13 months or so.

BTW, "if you are not a part of a solution , you are a part of a problem" is one of the rubbish truisms along with "if it ain't broke don't fix it". Pure crap rhetoric (consider how advanced your car/computer/toaster) would be without needless "fixing"

Err... at no point did I suggest that you migrate your servers to Fedora. I asked if you had tried the Fedora DRIVERS on your RHEL 5 installation.

I've had decent luck using Fedora DRIVERS (notice I'm not saying that I switched to Fedora) on my CentOS 4.X servers.

I have already tried the modules on the RHL 5 but only in a Virtual Conditions and they are working so far..
But I am on a VMWARE server and I do not know what it will happened on real conditions.Of course you know that I had to instmod the modules which I do not think that this is the right way...!!Anyway they are working.But I had to boot Red Hat from a IDE drive and then to insert the modules in to kernel and then put the SATA II drives to be seen by RED HAT.YES so far it worked but only on the Virtual System.!! How am I going to do this on a Production Line???I cannot put any IDE drivers (Hardware) in the Blades Server.!Of course I can on a virtual system.But what about on a real system???
As far as I know I have to have a ready SATA II Kernel RHL 5 support.How am I going to do this????Maye I have to recompile the kernel including these drivers..????I really do not know and I have done so much already.What I mean is that I have taken a lot of work at home which is very un-exceptable for me.I also have the pressure from my superiors to end this matter as soon as possible.The new users have to work as soon as possible.
I know that you cannot understand but I am very appreciating your help.Also I will be more pleased If you tell me how to build an operative RHL 5 Kernel with Fedora drivers..!!!???

Hmm. Unfortunately we're going beyond the limits of my linux knowledge. The only suggestion I can make is to check out revisor: http://revisor.fedoraunity.org/ and see if you can use revisor to create a custom ISO for your RHEL 5 installation that includes the kernel modules that you need during installation.

If that doesn't work then I'm afraid I won't be able to offer much more help :(

To much trolling on this thread.

Maybe the OP should pay VIA to make drivers for RHEL5, or go back to Windows. The cost would probably be about the same. Or he could just buy a bunch of old school pata hard drives for not much and do it that way (less cost and no sata), or use SCSI hardware which is usually quite well supported in Linux.

But no he comes on here and trolls (something that your typical dumb administrator will do), and over uses the exclamation mark and question mark. Would love to know how he got his job, or who he slept with, because with his attitude i wouldnt employ him, he comes across as a joke.
