Remote upgrade from RHEL4 to RHEL5 possible?

I have some servers in a remote location that I would like to upgrade from RHEL4 to RHEL5. If possible, I would like to avoid the expense of visiting these servers. I currently have SSH access and I was wondering if there was a way to do this upgrade remotely.

Thanks!

Not as far as I know. You need to be able to get to the BIOS menu, so when booting from CD/DVD/Network/whatever, you can run the upgrade. There are some KVM switches that allow you to have remote access to the console screen, which would save you the trip (since you've obviously got network access), but that does need a good amount of bandwidth. Running on a 56k circuit won't get you usable results.

There's no KVM at the servers, so that's not really an option.

I was thinking of something more along the lines of somehow upgrading a bunch of files/RPMs and then rebooting into RHEL5.

In doing some googling, I found a posting that would allow a Red Hat upgrade from 7.3 to 8.0 by manually upgrading the redhat-release RPM and then letting up2date do the work. I wonder if something like this is still viable.

I tried doing this with Fedora and the yum interface, changing the repos as necessary. The result was a system that would not boot, so not only did I have to visit the site, but I had an embarrassing amount of downtime on my hands, too. I've been too afraid to try any remote kernel-level updates since.

You should check with RH support for a definitive answer, but I'm 95% sure this is not possible (or supported).
