RedHat HPC

hey guys,

Alright, this is the situation:

I just landed a project to install a High Performance Computing Cluster (HPC or HPCC) for a university lab. The solution need to be based on RHEL.

So I went to redhat.com and found the appropriate software bundle (RHEL WS) and everything. but not a single shred of documentation about how to go about implementing the damn thing!!!

anyone got a guide or howto to get me going, I have no idea how to start!!!!

thanks,
Aburosea

Take a look at:

You would probably also find the resources on www.beowulf.org and perhaps www.supercluster.org useful. But it would help if you would tell us exactly what uses you envision for the cluster.

the cluster is mainly for modelling and simulation. But at this point im concerned with getting it up and running with all the necessary components. I have taken a look at the sites you provided, but I was hoping I could find something specifically tailored to RHEL distro.

The link I gave you is to the official redhat cluster documentation, unless I'm missing something.

maybe i didnt explain myself properly, my fault.

I know the documentation of the cluster suite inside out, it has nothing to do with HPC, the cluster suite is used for load-balancing and high-availability solutions.

So as u can tell, it doesnt exactly answer my needs.

I thank you deeply though for actually taking the effort to help me out... cheers for that..

that seems to be useful advise.

What hardware do you have, homogenous, heterogenous, any shared memory cards etc? It's about 3 years ago I had a look into this, but it seemed to me really advisable to give some info on what hardware you have.. The sun simulations that ran at our institute ran a homogenous Beowulf system with hp fortran etc.

Its a homogenous environment. HP Intel-based machines. Its a setup for a university lab and they will be running all sorts of simulations on it. I dont have the exact details.

I guess what i want to know in specfic is the following:

1. RedHat has a RHEL WorkStation that it claims is designed for development and HPC. does that mean that HPC tools such as scheduling and management for HPCCs included?

2. If not, has anyone tried Ganglia? or would you recommend something else?

Thank you
