RedHat ES 3.0 won’t install on HP DL360 with sm6i
 

Hello All,
I am attempting to install Red Hat Enterprise ES 3.0 on HP Proliant DL360 G4 with dual cpu, 2/GB memory, 2 36/GB disks and Smart Array Plus Control 6i (integrated on system board).
After selecting the option to partition the filesystem automatically -- I get the following error message < *** An error has occurred no devices were found on which to create new filesystem please check your hardware for the cause of this problem ***> and that is the end of my installation process.

Ps. I have tried with and without the hardware RAID 1 configuration and getting the same error message.

Any help is appreciated,

On a DL380 R1 I had the same message. At boot I used the F10 configure RAID option and made sure the RAID controller knew the disks. Saved that and retired install. Went fine.

I am trying to install RedHat on a compaq DL380G. I am getting the same eroor message

I configured the RAIN using F10 etc. but that had no affect. Any other ideas out there?

You may need to get the HP driver for Smart Array6400 (6i).
I don't think Red Hat's cciss driver detects the 6400 or 6i RAID controller. I know for sure that AS2.1 does not. Make sure you download the driver diskette image driver for Smart Array 6400 (6i) rather than the regular driver (RPM).
Using the diskette image, you will make a diskette driver. When you start the Red Hat installer, at the boot: prompt, type in linux update and insert the diskette.
The installer will load the driver on the diskette and when you get to the partitioning section (disk druid, fdisk, etc..) section of the install, you will indeed see the disk array.

Thanks for your help, but in the meantime, we solved the problem. I found it elsewhere on the net. We downloaded update 3 for Red Hat AS and it worked fine!

I am having this trouble too, on an HP DL380 G4 and trying to install RH ES3 (version 3). I've updated the smartarray 6i firmware, the server's BIOS firmware, and created the Linux driver diskette using the drivers off the HP site, but the Redhat installation still says there are no valid drives when you get to the partitioning part of the install. If I try to use the "linux dd" option at the boot: prompt in order to specify a driver disk, it scans the disk and then says that no valid drivers were found. I've checked the disk and it is not corrupt.

I'm at my wit's end here - I have no idea what to do next. Anyone had a similar problem and found a solution?

Oh, forgot to mention that I've also gone into the array configuration menu and recreated the drive arrays from scratch, but still no success.

libsys, I wanted to let you know that I have also had considerable problems in getting RedHat to install using the CD's on several Compaq(HP) products. Specificly the DL380G3. More often than not I simply break down and perform a netwrok install, or beg/borrow/steal an external USB CD-ROM and run the installtion from it.

I know that it sounds stupid but it works.

Actually, I worked it out - it seems the version of RHEL I was using was version 3, but not updated. I downloaded the RHEL 3 update 4 isos off the Redhat Network site (we have an account), burnt them to CD and booted off those, and it worked fine.

Initially I did try to use the original cds I had, but load the updated Smart Array drivers as a driver diskette, but the redhat installer wouldn't see the drivers on the disk, even though I specifically downloaded the Linux "driver disk" disk image from the HP site.

Anyway, looks like I was making it harder than it really was! So if anyone else is having problems with this, I would recommend making sure you have the latest updated version of RHEL 3.
