Redhat Enterprise 3 upgrade to Redhat 4...

Hi All,

I really just want some opinions to be honest.

I am wondering how possible it is to upgrade from Linux Red Hat Enterprise 3 to Enterprise 4. I don't think that we have a current up to date subscription to the Redhat network.

Reading through the documentation on the RedHat site, they say that its possible to do a straight forward upgrade (prosumably using the CD's or FTP approach).

My question is this:

Has anyone upgraded from Enterprise 3 to Enterprise 4? How did you do it? How difficult was it? And possibly more importantly have you got any recomendation for me.

Thanks for reading and subsequent posts in advance. Thanks,

B14...aka Marky Boy...the Frozen moneky in the server room...

Yes it is possible and fairly straight forward. As always it is advisable to have a current backup of everything that is important before starting.

One of the options from the installation process is to upgrade the existing installed version. Some suggested reading;

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yeah I read up on these notes. They state that a fresh install is preferable to an upgrade though (reading between the lines). I was just wondering, if anyone had an experences of either.

thanks for the post though,

Yes, they (Red Hat) does recommend upgrading by a fresh install. This is a very good idea for the reason your going from a 2.4 kernel series to a 2.6 kernel series and things are a bit different in RHEL4 as compared to RHEL3.

You might want to wait a few days before you upgrade (lets say March 15th or so).

Talking

Is there any particular reason for that? I heard that Redhat's SSL Certificate ran out, but I must confess to being out of the loop regarding Redhat developments.

Thanks for the posts, and for taking to time to deal with my novice questions.

Thanks again,
