mounting smb or nfs dir to existing windows path
 

Machines:
Windows 2003 SP1
RHEL4.4

Task:

Share /tmp/share from the the RHEL box. (Completed w/ Samba or NFS)

Mount /tmp/share to D:\Data\Share on windows 2003 box (Completely Lost)

Question:

Is it possible to mount an existing directory to a samba or nfs share?

Reason:

At the moment we have been using SFU for windows to run an NFS Server to share out D:\Data\Share and then mount from fstab on the RHEL side. I would like to house the shares on the RHEL side and mount them from the windows side, but it has to be mounted to D:\Data\Share otherwise I will be breaking a lot of other things that write to this.

From my experience I can only mount a new drive from the windows side and not an existing path\folder

found symbolic linking in windows, but am unable to link a mounted samba share in windows to a folder... Looking for something that will allow symbolic linking between an ext3 partition (the mounted samba share in windows) to an existing directory on an NTFS partition.

From my experience with windows, the only tools you have for doing this sort of thing are are Map Network Drive and SUBST. Neither are exact enough to do what you wish. If you cannot house everything from the existing D: on the RHEL box then you are snookered. If you can then you copy all the data across, then reassign the physical drive letter in Windows device mangler (Control Panel, System, hardware), and map the samba share to D:.
