Migrate from AS to ES ?

I have had this RHEL 3.0 AS running now for a year here, but our subscription expired recently. The server is running as our intra-net server, and it isnīt a mission critical server. I came to conclusion that we donīt need these AS support and hardware options. The right product for us is RHEL ES. So I ordered 3 years subscription (RHEL ES basic) and Iīm now wondering if somebody has experience migrating from AS to ES.
Is it possible to upgrade from AS to ES or do I have to install from scratch ?

There isn't a supported method for migrating from AS to ES. If you want to do this and not run into any potential headaches, the best thing to do is back up and reinstall with ES. This is also the only supported method from Red Hat.

Hi All

ES is simply AS minus a few packages. Keep your system, change the /etc/redhat-release to that of ES and you're on your way, your subscription will then work for that machine, but you probably won't get patches for the packages that are only in AS.

redhat-release is a package, see which one you have installed and find the parallel for ES. All the package contains is this single file.

How important are patches (errata) for you?

The only catch is you should check that the ES file you use corresponds with the AS file and all should be ok..

eg:

cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 3 (Taroon Update 4)

cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon Update 4)

Good luck

The above method is an easy way to do things, however, Red Hat does not support it....you are welcome to try it but beware!

Hmmm, Iīll changed this redhat-release as guided earlier but I still cannot subscribe my system. When I do up2date--register I get following error:
Invalid Architecture and OS release combination (3AS, i686-redhat-linux).
Your system has been registered, but will not receive updates
because it is not subscribed to a channel. If you have not yet
activated your product for service, please visit our website at:......

Any ideas, or was this what LinuxPimp said about patching ?

I told you it probably wouldn't work and that for sure Red Hat isn't going to support doing this.

Do a clean install of ES.
