Microsoft Live communication server 2005 client for linux?

Hi all,
my company has choosen Microsoft Live Communication Server 2005 as the standard IM/SIP platform.
As a result, we have to use Office Communicator 2005, under Windows, as the client.
Since me and a number of colleagues of mine use linux, we're trying to find if a client for linux exists.
I tried to install Office Communicator 2005 (or Windows Messenger 5.1) under wine and/or crossover office, but this doesn't work.
I also have seen that Trillian has a plugin for LCS and I know that Trillian can run under wine, but the plugin only enables the textual chat, while I need voice as well.

Do you have any idea on this?

I know this may not answer your question but try using wildfire. Its a great IM, Sip server also free. I also used M$live Communication Server 2005. I made the switch now I am a happy camper.

So, I guess they just chose to not have you be part of the solution, or did they do this to purposefully kill your use of linux desktops?

Or were they unaware you're using linux desktops?

I don't think there is anything that'll support this on linux. There should be SIP standards, but you're talking about a Microsoft solution.

Thanks for the great tip. Now, I just need one more reason to abandon MS LCS 2005... which is video. Do you know of any video plug-in that could work with wildfire? Live Communications Servers have that feature, which is one of the reason why we are stuck with them.

LCS is a SIP server but only on TCP and TLS , so classic SIP client such as ekiga do only UDP, but if you find a TCP client such as minisip , it should work ! Let US know ...

No and this is a BIG problem.

I saw Microsoft booth in a Linux exhibition in Paris Last Week ( Solutions linux 2007 ) and ask them which SIP client I could use other than WM5.1 , They could not tell me but thay shall contact me , I'll tell ya ...

In the mena time , MiniSIP and others can do SIP over TCP or TLS , That's what we need

For anyone searching this forum for this topic in the future:

I've been looking for a Linux client that can connect to LCS (MS Communicator server) for quite some time as my employer also uses it.

The previous comments are right that there is still no Linux client with this capability yet, though the protocol has been requested and support for it might be added soon if people keep expressing the need for it. You can do so by visiting the Kopete bug tracker and voting for it at (link to follow in my next post since I can't post links until making one other post first -- forum rule). There is a similar request for Pidgin at (link to follow in my next post).

If you are interested in seeing this protocol supported in Linux, it is strongly recommended you visit the above sites, vote for the new feature and request the developers work on it. Offers to help out in some way (coding documenting, testing) would most certainly do well to move things along too (I offered to help test since I'm not a programmer).

The very latest version of Wine supposedly runs Communicator in Linux, though I haven't been able to try that one yet. I've been using VirtualBox virtualisation with seamless windowing, which doesn't work that great (for some reason I can't copy/ paste when running it).

So again, if you need support for the MS LCS/ SIP/ SIMPLE protocol in Linux, please visit those links, vote, and post a comment expressing your desire to see it implemented and it might happen some time soon (fingers crossed tightly!).
