issue with GRUB and /dev/cciss/

Got an old proliant 350, was running old RHEL2 (Panama, i know it's EOL) did some updates, rebooted and now the hdd won't boot. Run a rescue cd and can see the data on the root disk, the cciss driver even gets loaded, but I cannot do a grub-install as any of the normal names for the device are not recognized. During the boot process it stops at GRUB, wihch tells me that there's something wrong with grub. Any ideas? Questions?

Please help to figure this out.

Thanks.

Well I think I figured this one out on my own. What I did was google tons of ideas and found a couple that were actually useful:

1)make sure that /boot/grub/device.map file has the entry "(hd0) /dev/cciss/c0d0" in it, which didn't help me but might be useful to someone else.
2) try to do an upgrade using the rescue disk and unselect most of the packages. This actually worked for me, I had to unselect 90% of the packages due to the fact that I only had the first cd so could only install the bare necessities.

Now I have to go through and basically reconfigure the host with ssh and all my networking info so I can mount the backup tapes and restore certain directories and files. The data was originally in fine condition on the hdd's but I just couldn't boot and grub would not install. Performing the upgrade wiped out some of the files, especially under /etc concerning vfstab and various other config files, however, it did re-install grub for me. I am hoping that after the restore everything will be fine with my server.
