Is there a centos 5 how-to for less than beginners?

I need a newbie resource to learn centos 5 installation and setup as a home business file server. In the future we will expand its functions, but for now just file serving.

Thanks,

Shimon

Read the documentation :
http://www.centos.org/docs/5/

You can do a minimal server install by choosing to customise the installed packages from the graphical install, and unchecking all the packages. But you will be left with a command line environment only - is that what you want ?
Otherwise just select one desktop environment and what ever fileserving software you want under Servers in the package chooser.
http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5....tion-group-x86
I suggest you leave everything else as default, especially the partitioning and boot set up.

No, I have no Linux experience with the power-using command line interface. I need a GUI interface until I am comfortable in the (BASH) shell. Your link is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Shimon

It sounds as if the file server part will take up more of your time than the install; in that case, what you are most likely to need concerns Linux networking and file serving. The link to 'linuxhomenetworking' in post #4 covers all of this (and more).

The only way to get comfortable on the command line is to just jump right in...

with your lack of linux experience you might want to think about paying Red Hat for the tech support

and install REHL 5.4 . the tech support is well worth the caust $$$ in the long run .

shimonbenyaakov, what you might want to do is pay Red Hat for a year or two then take over after you have learned a few things .
