IBM AS/400 connection with Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic-Koala desktop

I am trying to connect Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koal Desktops with an AS/400.
Using tn5250, or x3270 does partially the job.

Still I need to show the function keys up to PF24. The typing through keyboard isn't working on all cases.

Any ideas that might help?
Somebody has perhaps done this before? (hopefully successful!)

My understanding is that tn5250 has a vt100-style escape sequences ESC-1 through ESC-= for F1 through F12 and ESC-! through ESC-+ for F13 through F24 been a while though, if Im wrong let me know I will dig deeper in the memory banks lol
