How to extract the files in terminal in linux redhat 5


Dear All,
I am new to linux and learning one by one. i would like to ask one question here, i just want to know how to extract the various files like .tar.bz2,tar.gz,tar.xz. can anyone tell me the easiest way to remember the commands to extract the above files. usually i am not using package manager to install the software through terminal only i am extracting the files and installing the software's and also give me some idea about rpm.

You can use the tar command for these.

Although there are special options for tar.bz2, tar.xz, etc, you can use the following (tar is smart enough to know which needs to be used):

tar xf package.tar.<xyz>
