How to create username with period

Hi

I am running RHEL 3.0 AS on my server system

When i create a username like this "vikram.ns"
It shows error message saying that the username is not valid.

Pls help me to solve this problem

I don't think linux accept such username, it accept ASCII only

Is there any way to create that kind or usernames
I tried editing manually the "/etc/passwd", "/etc/shadow", "/etc/group" and "/etc/gshadow" that user is working fine.

I just need a command based interface to create usernames with periods

u mentioned that u r having RHEL 3 AS. It will allow you to add a new user with period. However, if it is still giving the error try this:-

useradd vikram\.ns
