I am trying to install SuSE 9.2 onto an IBM Netfinity 5000 Server and am encountering two problems the first i could live with but would be nice to fix, the second is not optional for me.
The first is that the graphics are not displayed correctly during the install. The text boxes appear black but you can read text by highlighting it. They are just good enough to navigate through the install but would be really nice if there is a way to fix this. The graphics are onboard S3. This is not critical because once setup it probably wont have a monitor plugged in most of the time and will be runlevel 3.
This is the real problem. The computer appears to freeze during : "Preparing Your Hard Disk" - "Formatting /dev/hda6 as /Home", although i have tried other partition configurations as well and have the same freezing problem. The cusor becomes very jerky as you move it then locks altogether. I have left the machine for over 2hrs with no change. It is a 160GB Samsugn ATA spinright HD. The BIOS reports this drive as being 8455MB's but SuSE sees the enitre disc fine. Also the progress bar indicates 100% before/as it freezes.
How about downloading gentoo linux. And using the install cd right up to the partitioning section to partition and format your hard drive. Then. shut it off, put in the suse disk, and use the partitioned and formatted harddrive to install to without reformatting?
I have now managed to partition and format the hard disc (not using the installer).
So i now run through the SuSE 9.2 Pro install telling the installer not to format anything. Unfortunatly it now fails just after where it would normally fail during formatting at the (i think it said) Activating/Initialising stage on /home. Any more ideas would be great.
NB. the HDD is new and i have run the full samsung HDD diagnostics program HUTIL a few times with no errors so i am confident it is not related to the drive itself.
I have been posting in a laptop section because my Acer Aspire 1301XV laptop (VIA chipset, Athlon XP, 256MB RAM and 40GB HD) freezes completely (only the power button works) at random points during the install of SuSE Linux 9.2 ftp. I have re-installed SuSE 9.1 and my laptop is again working perfectly. I strongly suspect the 2.6.8 kernel (2.6.5 is fine).
First ,what configuration tool do you use, that's to say ,do you use the default format-configure or you master it youself
if not ,try to do another.
Seconed, try to mount on another file sytem ,such as /var (/opt) just like solaris distribution does.Good luck!
