Question CORBA error

Dear all,

A new error has cropped up today while downloading software from other site. I get the following error boxes:
An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for File Roller. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.

and then a further sub-box within this box:

Adding client to server's list failed, CORBA error: IDLmg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0
Adding client to server's list failed, CORBA error: IDLmg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0

I have seen a previous CORBA error post, and someone advised simply to delete /tmp/orbit<user> and rebooting.

My /tmp does indeed contain this file and I guess that I should delete it. But I want to know what is CORBA and /tmp/orbit<user> and how does deleting it get rid of the error?

Is there serious and/or permanent damage done?

I have to admit, today I was tinkering around with the /tmp space deleting files which I thought were not important. This prompts a general question: is it safe to delete /tmp files? (I note that on my /tmp space there are some files dating back months: one dated Jun 5 2007, and an root-orbit dating to Jan 1 1970!)

By the way, my default web browser, firefox, has gone from the icon rack and reverted back to Mozilla; but when I click the Mozilla icon it says that it does not exist. I have to start firefox through the longer process of the drop-down menu. Is this a related problem?

Thanks.

CORBA is a framework for distributed computing; it goes back about twenty years (predating Java)...
... and it looks like you've got some CORBA-based application that wants to write stuff to /tmp.

Gosh knows *what* it's writing ... or whether it's important or not (I guess maybe it is - to that program, at least).

"Date stamps" are stored as a big integer. The integer "0" corresponds to the date "Jan 1, 1970".

Thumbs down

Same problem here after updating software.
I get the following error when opening Gnome Terminal:
Code:
An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for gnome-terminal. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.
Adding client to server's list failed, CORBA error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0
And the following error when I insert a usb thumb drive:
Code:
An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for Nautilus. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.
GConf error: Adding client to server's list failed, CORBA error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0
I consider myself a newbie, but am still looking for a solution online.

/edit.

A reboot fixed this issue for me.
