cannot initialize samba sid SuSE Enterprise 9

Has anyone seen this?
I get a "bad password" error when users created on SuSE server ( configured as Primary Domain Controller) try to log on to the Samba domain from Windows XP (pro). I *can* join XP boxes to the SuSE Samba domain using the root account. I have configured DHCP, DNS, WINS, etc, and can verify that XP boxes get the right IP addresses for services, and have verified layer 3 connectivity, and can see samba shares from Windows. Using YaST, I created the users with default settings ( after setting up Samba )and since getting the error have attempted to edit the Samba user settings using the built in stuff in YaST. ( Edit User-> details-> next-> manage samba account parameters ).When I try to edit the samba account parameters, I get the error" ERROR Could not initialize samba SID. Disabling plug in". I have no idea how to interact manually with Samba other than the smb.conf file and I don't see a line there that obviously applies to this issue. Testparms doesn't return an obvious error, and I'm not sure if this is a bug, or whether I am not able to accomplish this due to the fact that I'm using a trial version of SLES9. I have applied all current patches from Novell. Novell's documentation that I have found doesn't address using the "manage samba account paramaters" feature of YaST. I have yet to address the known issue of password encryption between Samba and Windows, but my feeling is that since the root account is able to join Windows computers to the domain, that password encryption is not the problem. I will edit this post and add my smb.conf file for inspection if necessary. One suggestion in an earlier post was to install SWAT, but I don't want to screw up YaST interface.
My XP boxes are up to SP1 updates.

Any guidance is appreciated,
Marc
