Here are some questions to answer that might lead you to the problem:

- Do the Samba server and the XP machine belong to the same domain/workgroup?
- Is there a WINS server on your network? Does Samba use the WINS server?
- Is Samba acting as the WINS server? Does the XP machine know this?

Cheers.

Is samba i.e nmbd and smbd running?
Check the nmbd and smbd logs for errors.
Enable netbios over TCP/IP in XP.
open up a xp command window (cmd.exe) and run the command
net view
Post any error messages.
