Best printer driver for Texas Instruments omni 800 model 8920 dot matrix

Our company just migrated to a new Linux Server - RedHat 7.2.
We have a bunch of dot matrix printers-one is an TI Omni 800 model 8920. I have it set up in CUPS as a Generic text-only printer. It has been working fine except for a couple of instances lately where a file that was printed contains a line which has an unwanted control characters. This comes from the data. For example, today an address had a "^@" in it- at least that's what it showed in VI. This caused the printer to stop printing at that point.
The same file printed fine on our old HP-UNIX server.
I changed the type to a Generic PCL 4 LF, etc printer which took care of that problem, but caused a problem on a file that has some hyphens and "|" characters to create boxes.

Does anyone know of a driver or something else I can do so both files will print correcty? I need something to work like it did on the old UNIX box. I need an immediate solution that will work with the printers and the data I have now. Thanks!

Welcome to LinuxQuestions

Hopefully the 8920 is similar to the 8900. I would configure the printer to use Epson FX emulation and then use an Epson FX printer from the cups list. I think there was an 850 that might work. If experimenting with Epson does not work you can also try using IBM Proprinter XL emulation.

Thank you for your quick response. I do not have the Epson FX or the IBM Pro Printer listed in CUPS. Is there a way to add them? Thank you for attaching the manual- I have looked at it and am going to look further. Not that the solution you stated is that complicated, but I was hoping to not change anything on the printer itself. I have several of them and several pre-printed stock and multi-part forms and am cautious about making big changes that could affect so much.

The old cups filters are no longer included by default. You can download them from linuxfoundation and hopefully there is something more compatible. Your particular printer is not in the openprinting database which is why I suggested using a more compatible mode but as it turns out the Proprinter is not in there either.
