backup multiple SuSE images under VM

I have many SuSE 8 images running under ZVM 5.1 on a mainframe. We back up everything from a ZOS mainframe attached to the same SAN. THIS CANNOT BE RESTORED!!!! The restore has many errors in the REISERFS disks and is unusable after a restore. How do others back up their SuSE systems? HELP!!!!!!!! I have too many systems to ask for duplicate disks on everything and do disk to disk backups. The FDR full volume backups do not work.

If you want a byte by byte copy of the entire running image, you can use "dd" for this (if you don't mind the long backup time.) Just type in...
Code:

dd if=/dev/<resource> of=<remote location path>/<filename>.iso
It will create a single, very large file that contains all the information from the resource stated. Hope this helps!

I have 18 images to backup, so this is not very prictical. I am looking for a product to run on the mainframe operating system either SuSE Linux, ZVM, or ZOS. The current FDR product on ZOS is not working. When I restore, it will not boot.

There are some commmercial packages out there that use more sophisticated algorithmns or proprietary backup formats to shorten the mirroring time, but I guess it really depends on how much you want to backup. If you are looking for a complete bootable image, dd is the command for the job, but if you need something faster, you might be better looking at a commercial product like Norton Ghost.
