Authenticating XP users against Linux, including SSO?

Is it possible to configure a linux server so that windows (xp, vista, 7) can login with network credentials and have single-signon access to network resources a) without a single windows server on the network, and b) without resorting to NT4 PDC's via samba?

As far as I can tell, stable releases of Samba cannot act as the primary AD domain controller.
