Apache directory level permissions problem

I want to set user access to a file within a sub directory of htdocs in my Apache 2.2 install. However, the login dialogue shows up for one directory up and I just want the dialogue to appear for the file in the subdirectory.

How should I go about this?

htaccess works on directories not files. Put the .htaccess files in the subdirectory.

Oops seems like that's changed -
