Good PDA-sized computer?
Evening LQ.
I have been looking for a good, portable computer. (for a assistant gadget im thinking of making) Something similar too http://www.opensourcemid.org/ Basicly something handheld that has: 1: Some form of LCD-screen 2: Built-in CPU et.c. (Intel Atom would be nice, but anything with more then 1000 MIPS should work fine) 3: Audio-chip 4: USB-ports for input. 5: Under 400 euros 6: Preferably Linux-compatible but i can manage with WinCE or something else i guess. I have been searching for something like this, since I want to avoid having to build everything from scratch (is it even possible to buy a Intel Atom board in small numbers?) but found nothing besides opensourcemid. I know there are tons of commercial PDAs like Palm but i would prefer to avoid them since I might start selling units if my idea has some merit. If there are no devices like this then does anyone know a good board (Atom, ARM or MIPS) with audio, USB and some form of display-connection built-in? Then I can just attach an LCD and put it into my own casing. I would be thankful for any suggestions. :) |
There's lots of Tablet PC's out there with varying sizes. you can get one that is pretty much the size of a laptop screen, as well as all the ipad-sized ones that run android. I'm not sure about their linux compatibility but i'd bet there's a few that are open enough to be able to accept a linux install.
as far as making your own, i believe newegg.com has a lot of very very small motherboards that run Atom CPU's, some are small enough to fit in a case the size of a deck of cards. |

Whenever i search I only find PDAs that cost to much (350 erous is my maximum). If I buy an Atom board, how hard would it be to make it run on a portable battery? Edit: do you have a link for a really small Atom board? When i search I only find boards that are for HTPCs and such, i need something much smaller. |
I have bought the Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker with Ubuntu installed. I specifically did not want telephone. I wanted a device I could use primarily for a pocket database & Basket Notes with integrated wireless for limited web browsing. With the usual set of tools such as ssh & rsync this works very well for me.

i seen an archos video player that ran android at sears for $129.99.
