Xandros: can I install packages from other distros?

clarification -- I just installed Xandros which I got from torrent a few weeks ago. Debian pissed me off, so for the next 18 hours I figure I'll have no pure Debian installed. Then we'll make up...

Xandros looks SLICK. Wow. I'm tempted to triple boot with XP, Xandros and Sarge. My primary master drive with XP is not called "hda". Oh no. It's called "C:"! Instead of "/cdrom" and "/cdrom0" it distinguishes those as "CDRW" and "DVD writer". I'm more accostomed to Synaptic Package Manager, but their Xandros Network thingie seems fairly adequate. I noticed at the top in the toolbar that it has among other things two options: Install from .deb, Install from .rpm.

Neato.

So I have a number of distro images I've burned to either CDR or DVD. Many of these are Debian or Red Hat based, but there are still other flavors. One thing I don't like about Xandros is that it has limited ready-to-install-software. Debian DVDs has a TON of good stuff. Fedora 4 DVD and Madriva DVD also probably has something I'd be interested in borrowing...

The question: is there a way to use the Debian and RH DVD/CDRs as source material to install on Xandros? Can I take 'dope wars' or 'Super Tux' from a Knoppix DVD and install it on Xandros? Does this make sense to anyone else?

Grateful for your input.

Got another 'wow' for Xandros -- this awesome distro took care of the PIA (that's pain in teh *** for those in Rio Linda) ATI Radeon 9800 pro drivers for me !!!!!!!
!!!!

!!!!!!

To realize this I opened a console and typed "fglrxinfo". I expected to see some generic "mesa" drivers like Debian does when I just install fresh. Not this bad boy. For true confirmation I ran "glxgears". Here's the output:
19083 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3816.600 FPS
23087 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4617.400 FPS

:D

Now I'm off to install some demos et al. So far Xandros is kicking the trash out of every distro out there. Now if it can make use of all the other distros for source programs I'll be ecstatic...

How is it at installing rpms for other distros? Any of the games and other software from your other CDs working?
You really are liking the Xandros Network install manager... do I still have to install stuff CLI, or is it working for nearly everything with installer packages?

If Xandros is as easy to configure and get ATI 3d acceleration working, I may just give it a shot.

Well, I tried but had zero success using my many other DVD/CDROMs as source material.

And now I don't remember if I even managed to play any demos...
...and that was only a few days ago...

I tried triple booting with XP on hda, Xandros on hdb and Mandriva also on hdb, but once I did that I screwed up my boot options -- I really thought Xandros would still be an option. Then it wasn't....so I started over with Debian....

Sorry. I need to figure out those nuances in Debian. It's like having a big mountain before you. If you give up the mountain wins. Sometime soon I'll reinstall Xandros and continue my experiments.

Well then for now, I will continue on with SuSE< and hope some day soon I can get that damn 3d acceleration going.

xandros questions

I have xandros(sarge-based),libranet(sarge-based),xp and SLW on one pc. Xandros' lilo detected the other oses; and i can boot any of then from x3 lilo in mbr. But xandros has an active forum and u will be told there and in any debian-based site about being careful what pkgs u install and upgrade or u may break system. And they will guide u to many useful sites with programs installable to xandros with XN, synaptic,apt-get or alien.
U may want to continue with xandros or try a debian live cd(mepis, kanotix, knoppix, etc) until u get used to pkg system. For me having the safety of xandros and its great filemanager has let me explore debian more and SLW as well w/o a lot of jumping around from os to os.

I guess I'm familiar enough with Synaptic (Debian stuff) to be able to install, uninstall and reinstall packages. I also have Knoppix and have absolutely fallen head over heels in love(well not really) with MEPIS. MEPIS is wonderful, though on one installation I'm having troubles with 3d accelerated games working correctly (they're a little choppy in parts)(ut2004). Knoppix is only slightly useful to me -- it's basicly an unpure Debian system once installed to disk. Maybe I should just go with Xandros.
