When my wife had problems with Windows originated difficulties, I moved her to Xandros, which is based on Debian. There are versions you can download, and those you can purchase. Though I have purchsed our copies over the years, the downloadable version seems to be well respected. The current version is based on debian Sarge.
didnt read the full thing sorry if any thing is off base but
ive used ubuntu kubuntu fedora core 3 & 4 some red hat version and an older suse
i currently use opensuse 10.1 and would recommend it to anyone not linux savy even when wanting to use it on a windows network or to replace a linux 2003 box being used for network logon and file share it much easier to make suse do all that then to make 2003 do it odly enough
RedFlag distro is the most like windows distro among all my used.
RedFlag is windows-like look and windows-like manipulation, you can configure samba server, print server, ftp server easy, and the manipulation is almost same to windows.

I think Slackware with Blackbox or XFCE would be a beautifull. It would take you some time to make it SCREAM but once you get the hang of it .. you can install on other comps the same. A minimalist Slack install I have hrd to boot in 30 seconds flat.
Why would anyone want a linux to be like windows? I find it's interface nearly unusable after spending mere 2 years on mac-side, before that about 8 years on windows side out of which 7 years were pure windows period.
Well, just my
if you want windows like try linux xp personaly i feel suse or ubuntu are the only distros out there with a nice small learning curve for new users and you can get windows themes for KDE "for suse" ubuntu kubuntu breed has kde so that would work with that to i dont use gnome though so i dont know about it on ubuntu
