Which Linux?

I know this question's probably been asked 1000 times before but which *nix distro should I choose? I'm currently running Ubuntu/Linux but I think it's time for me to switch. So I'm gonna download some different os's (mostly Linux but am also gonna try solaris and free/openBSD) to try. My question is: What am I looking for?

I need:
Good compilers for most languages
Good laptop support
A simple X
Preferably a fast to boot/shutdown
Stable

Any suggestions?

/Richard

If you do a search using the words in your title, you will see hundreds of threads asking for the same information. The information given tends not to change.

And this is moved to Linux Distributions because Linux From Scratch is a distro all of it's own.

Slackware. It should work very well on some laptops, just search for some reviews over that. It's rock stable, has loads of packages including compilers and shells, X, and the bootup and shutdown times can be quite fast if you disable every unnecessary service.
