which distro now

i have been learning ubuntu for a while and like using the command line as much as posible.
now i am looking at advancing to another distro and have flagged slackware, debian or gentoo
as my next move.

Can i get advice on the difference between these and which i should go for.
i want to also install on a server and administer through ssh setting up different apps.
thankx in advance.

All of your prospects Slackware, Debian and Gentoo are capable and good at running as a server. Since you were from ubuntu you will feel very much at home with its mother Debian. Gentoo and Slackware will pose you newer challenges.

I use only Slackware and BSD but Gentoo is a very respectable distro as far as I can observe in their documentations and user fora. Decision is up to you.

Good luck.

May it help.

You can compare distros at distrowatch.com, especially here: http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major

In my 4 years on ubuntuforums, it seems like the most popular distributions people switch to are Debian (the "parent" distro of Ubuntu with stable, well-tested software) or Arch (for users with a strong "do it yourself" philosophy and desire for the latest bleeding edge software). I'll also put in a good word for Slackware, which maybe isn't for everybody but has excellent support here on linuxquestions if you think it's the right choice for you.

Plus on Debian

You may want to try Debian first and then Slackware.

Just my :twocents:
