which distro for this spec.

hi,
i want to use a distr. that comfort me in my lil needs:
programming on C, networking, internet...
and i want to use it along with Windooze on 1 HDD

i've tried RedHat for a period, yet i didnt like it, not recently....
anyway i just like to hear from u ppl , u r the best,
(* note: i found a Mandreva distro. in a store in a 25$ coming on 3 CDs.... idont know bout t but if u heard bout this market release u can give me a hint...)

i hope u can give me the best distro.

any distro would suite those requirements.

having linux and windows on the same HD should be ok, but it would be easier to have each on a seperate HD. again it should be ok, iv done it afew times and im sure lots of others have too.

the latest red hat (the free one is called fedora core, now) and is very good.. i dont use it because i dont like downloading and burning all those cds, and i dont have a dvd drive or burner.

if what you didnt like about red hat is the look and feel of the GUI (GNOME), then i suggest a distro that uses a different window manager and desktop environment, ie KDE or fluxbox.. the list goes on and on.

i recommend visiting distrowatch.com and looking at the list on the right for the most popular distros right now. click a name of one to read about it. it will provide a link to the official site of that distro, it will include list of included software and their versions. it will also include the price (usually free), number of cds required, the desktop environment (gnome or kde usually) and much more information.

i say pick any one from the list that interests you--download it, burn it, and install it!

id recommend kubuntu live cd or knoppix live cd/dvd for a test drive, as a beginner distro

i would go with ubuntu it is very popular for beginner users and the install is very straight forward. It should configure your entire system automatically, will let you keep windows intact and install a boot loader so that you can pick your OS at boot. Ubuntu also has a bunch of stuff for c programming in its package manager.
yet of course you will get this functionality out of most distros i just think this is the simplest
