ALSA seems to support this chipset. The module is snd-via82xx Seems that the OSS drivers had a flaw, so the ALSA drivers were written from scratch. As far as 2.6 kernels, seems that the module was integrated in 2.6.0, so after should work. There's enough to go on here. Your sound will work. We just have to coax it to.

BTW, can you post the results of lspci?

I apologize, but the kernel feature I told you to enable is not for sound, but for a lot of VIA motherboards, specifically the IDE bus on them. As I remember, I did have to enable this option on my motherboard in order to make use of DMA for my hard disks, so I'm sure this isn't going to help you much. Yes, please paste the output of lspci

http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...module=via82xx seems to be the page you'll need to refer to if the driver isn't already installed. In Mandrake 9.2 is ALSA installed?

try as root to run alsaconfig and see if your sound chip is on the list. Perhaps its there and you don't know it. That'd be kool! Good luck. Post results.

I got ALSA configuered using

and it used the via82xx stuff. So this now gives me great hope about other distros!!! Hopefuly in a couple weekends I'll get a chance to install a new distro!!!
