Which Distro??!?!?!?!!?

RIght-O

what I want is... a command line linux, to multi boot with 98 & XP

all I want to run on it is-

apache web server
PHP4 mod
CGI mod
Pure FTPd
MySQL

basically to use as a test PHP server at home!! for building PHP sites....

what is the smallest distro I can download to do this through my 56k modem.. I'm not bothered about all the bells and whistles of KDE and all that nonsense..

any advice appreciated!

peace to all..

That would definatly be Peanut Linux, it doesn't have all the bazass of the other distros but comes with Kernel 2.5.0 and XFree86 4.2.0 all for 99MB? too good to be true? not at all. it comes with a SUPER-EASY setup utility and comes with all the basic software you need and nothing you don't. The webpage is http://www.ibiblio.org/peanut/ if you wanna check it out.

The only drawback i can think of is that it comes with Enlightenment standard as the desktop manager and not KDE like the other distros but i guess if you want something nice and fast like you said Enlightenment rules.

Yup! you can just edit the xinitrc or whatever file that launches the Desktop to twm (after you installed it) and all you'll have is a green background with a command prompt in the middle!!!

If you still want the menus to your applications then Blackbox is the next simplist thing.

FreeBSD is in my opinion top notch. Its not TOO user friendly at first but simple and has pretty much everything you need. I love FreeBSD becuase its fast, stable and has a HUGE gallery of programs/ports available for use in the FreeBSD ftp site as well as in FreshPorts

Don't listen to this loser

For minimal installed, choose either debian or slack, and do base installs. debian is prob the best for your needs. and then you can apt-get exactly what you need. not a package more not a package less.

its brilliant in that way. you will never find two debian systems exactly the same.

STFU!, Debian and Slack are out of date, and if you wanna spend hour of recompiling new kernels and looking for up to date software on the net then so be it but my suggestions are good.

out of date... and why would that be oh guru... slack 8.0 ships with 2.4.5, which is perfectly adequate for operation. Please give REAL REAL REAL reasons why anything less than 2.4.17 is dangerous and useless... come on.. none of your usually bullsh*t rambling. REAL reasons. you thought that the dma transfer patch in 2.4.10 greatly affects the reliability of the system? don't give us any crap about you just thinking .17 was much faster than .16 or vice versa or whatever, cos it's NOT. slack 8 is perfectly acceptable. ok, getting slack over 56k isn't really an option, but that's not the issue. the issue is you talking out your arse yet again...

stfu?... ha, god you're in for it now...

what do you mean out of date therion ? anyone can download a new kernel and or packages/updates to a system and install them. its usually not that hard. ask isajera, she runs suse 6.4, but I bet she has her system updated further along than yours is out of the box... sorry isa, you were a good example..

there are many systems out there that are using redhat 6.2 and older, but are they out of date, NO, they upgrade accordingly. usually a later version is easier for newer installs with the latest packages.

I am sure I could install slackware 3.5 and have it fully updated within a few hours... so there is no such thing as outdated in the unix world, especially when its free.. we don't go by the latest version on the box... or at least I don't.

But but listen, Peanut linux comes with the latest kernel and everything for 99MB. It works good and is easy unlike Debian or Slack.

Ok, you got me on the part where you can update it...shoot.

dammit junior what is your fixation on teh very newest things for?? VERY few people have a reason to have the newest kernel, sure people like to keep thigns up to date, but there seldom an actual need.

and i'm still waiting for your list of genuine reasons to have the newest kernel...

but hold on a sec! 2.4.18 will be offical in two weeks or so... gahh you'll be on an ANCIENT system then... the shame!
