well, it depends wether or not you are looking for a bare bones distro which will run only what is needed to start and play music, or if your looking for a distro which will be the easiest to set up. For the easiest to set up: Ubuntu. It installs very easily and will install all the codecs you need for music. very, very easy. As for the bare bones/most efficient, I'm not so sure. I would look into Gentoo and see if that works for you.
I just installed Mandriva 2008.1, booted the system and everything worked from the get go. I have used Ubuntu also, I don't like the sudo stuff. Personal preference I know.
A lot depends on the hardware you are going to install on. You should check out the main items, like video card, sound card etc. If it is main stream stuff, then pick a distro and boot it as a live CD. If the video and sound work, you should be safe enough to install.
Distribution: Mandriva, Ubuntu, Goblinx, and linux xp
