what wold be the best disro for a (rev 1) b&w g3 (300-340mhz, i think?)

hello
i recently reveved a power mac g3 (B&W yay!) it has the rev 1 mother bord, running at 300 to 350 mhz (i dont know wich!!) it has 1gb(O.O)ram and is in good sape, stoc grafix card ans cpu(obusly)...oh ya and a new(to me) 40gig hd....so i just wanted to know what the fastest/best(mostly fastest) distro for it wold be...also i know linux fairly well but pleas no terminal based ditros, and no gentoo...other than that fair game(well no ubuntu with gnome...it is slow as a@@)

Off the top of my head, I'd suggest DSL (Damn Small Linux) or something else that uses XFCE or JWM to keep the resource usage down, possibly Zenwalk would be OK too. I have used both Zenwalk and DSL on our old 300MHz laptop and despite being 'not-very-fast' I couldn't really complain. There's not much substitute for CPU speed.

Making any distro *the fastest* is a subjective situation, not including the obvious which you have already pointed out: No Ubuntu with Gnome, too bloaty. Otherwise, it depends what you will be doing with it, what desktop you choose to use, and how many processes/services you have running, even though they take miniscule CPU cycles, it adds up on an old/slow machine.

Plug some filters into the Distrowatch.org/.com chooser search page, and research some of the options presented to you.

ok forgivness for not knowing mac, but the procesr is not x86(or even x86_64) it is a powerpc proceser,and most linux distros wont *run* on a ppc(powerpc) proceser...which is precisly why i started this thread, so i could se if any of you know a light fast ppc distro...on that note i'm 99% sure that dsl dsent have a ppc port...and i dont know about zenwalk...

I put a debian netinstall on my G3 iMac, it's a 500mhz with 512mb of ram and a 20gb hard drive. It was pretty straight foward. Then I added LXDE DE/WM and been cruising ever since. I had to google around on getting X server setup for the ATI video card but it wasn't hard to find out. Mine doesn't have a wireless nic so haven't done anything with that.

FredGSanford: the difrence betwen a 350mhz g3 and 500mhz is huge..but good to know that debian works.

now on a side note my ubuntu installs will work for a bit but over the space of a few days they beign to fail, menubars logins gnome even!! this is starting to get ridiculess!!
