You are supposed to be able to upgrade from one LTS to another.
I just didn't want to wait months before getting into the task at hand.
Since I couldn't upgrade to 13.04, and upgrade from 12.04 LTS -> 14.04 LTS wasn't available
(although release 14.04 LTS was), I decided to install 14.04 anew.
