redhat "X" should really be called redhat 9.1 (or maybe even 8.2) a change of the major version number is completely unwarranted for many reasons (assuming the don't change their mind before the final release)
1. they didn't update to the 2.6 kernel.
2. there were/are no "major" improvements in the os or software provided
3. calling it "X" makes me shudder from thoughts of it emulating mac (or windows 2)
my thought on redhat 10 is that they just want to get their version number heigher than mandrake or any other major distro. upgrading to 10 is pointless in my opinion. i'm only testing it because its part of my job and i have no plans on moving to it. I'll just dl the new packages/patches and upgrade that way.
those are just my thoughts on redhat X beta (9.0.93)
i'll let the flame wars begin on those comments
Red Hat will no longer be producing and selling "boxed sets" of Red Hat Linux, because that slows down development and is a major hindrance with a product that has a short release cycle (~ 6 months). They will continue developing Red Hat Linux using a more community-oriented development model.
Read more about the opened development process of the "Red Hat Linux Project" on http://rhl.redhat.com when that page opens again with the content you could see a few days after the RHLP announcement.

Rep:
I was looking for a replacement for Mandrake 8.2 on my system because it was getting old... I had considered RedHat 9 for a while, but determined that any Distro that was going to be shifting away from a packaged CD model and over to a download only model (or mail-order for burned CDs only model) was not for me. So therefore I chose SuSE 8.2 (I'll be sick of the numbers 8 and 2 pretty soon).
I'm glad I did. Despite some minor annoyances with not being able to run some of my games just yet, I think SuSE is poised to be the biggest winner among the distros. It has IBM in its corner, various European contracts, and the US Gov't approval for use in Gov't computers, just to name a few of its advantages...
