actually it isn't a big deal... i was just curious.

i use Xorg on FreeBSD, and i have no complaints.

I use Xorg 6.8.1 and have managed to integrate the composite extension into my desktop so its elegant rather than over-the-top eye candy which it can be

hey, did you have trouble with Grub? it loads up fine if i leave the splash screen disabled. when i set grub to show a splash screen, i get a blank screen with just a blinking cursor for 5 seconds (i think.. that is how long i set it to default out), and then it gets weird: i get horizontal white lines, and the text from the Linux load process is obfuscated! it's hard to describe, you can kind of read the text, but you cant.

it eventually goes away, and i know i can live with the text based screen. but i'd like to get the splash screen going.

How did you emerge grub ???

Grub source code has some inbuilt 32bit assembly, so if you compile grub as a 64bit aplication, i know that doesnt work.

you have to emerge grub as a pre-compiled package with the -k option.

i almost missed it and compiled it just from habbit, this was my first install on a 64bit machine.

i emerged it as done in the instructions:

emerge --usepkg grub-static

does the -k option do something different?

found the problem. in the grub.conf file, i misspelled splash.xpm.gz

strange thing is, i double checked it and still missed the error.

it works now.

I would like to try Gentoo and I am currently downloading it. I just would like to ask if it is one CD only? Coz I found a mirror site and there's only one ISO to download.

hi there!

i have now been on Gentoo for a while and it is very nice.

Yes, you really only need one CD. The main reason is that anything and everything you need (and want ) can be installed from over the internet. If this is not suitable, the largest CD contains all the bear essentials to a successful Gentoo installation.

If i were you, i'd just download and burn the minimal CD, and rely on ftp for everything else. not only is this convenient, you also will end up with the most up-to-date, stable software immediately, rather than updating and patching everything after the fact.
