userfriendly linux for older computers

Hi to all,

I'm writing a website (in Dutch) about migrating to linux (the linux-desktop). It's meant for linux newbies and I advice distro's like SuSE and Mandrake. I want to add some info about hardware requirements, and found about Mandrake 10.0:

Code:

required RAM: 64MB, recommended RAM: 128 MB
required disk-space: 500 MB, recommended disk space: 1 GB
processor: 586 or higher.

But what if you have an older computer? I cannot find hardware requirements for older distro's (say, from 2000). Can anyone give some ideas about hardware requirements for an older distro, so it can still run on an older computer, but still friendly for newbies?

Thanks!

There are people out there trying to build systems for small computers. But modern tools for this will use graphical envs. and offices not too friendly.
This list of livecd's will give you a good idea of projects with specific goals, including use of old computers.

But the best idea is to research distros from the same time, when the computer was being sold everywhere. Take a look at distrowatch, or linuxiso and search for mandrake 8.2, suse 7, or redhat 7.3. Redhat7.3 is used up to now, people like it very much. Those distros were supposed to work for computers with 64MB full, or even 32. Old kde's or old gnome's take less memory than today's.

Good luck!

okay, I think that gives some idea... thanks
