Upgrade kernel question

Hi all folks,

Gentoo 1.4
=========

I have following patches downloaded from kernel.org;

patch-2.6.0-test8-bk1.bz2 patch-2.6.0-test8.bz2

bunzip2 patch-2.6.0-test8.bz2
and
bunzip2 patch-2.6.0-test8-bk1.bz2

What step next shall I apply on those patches before taking following steps

make mrproper
make xconfig
make clean
make bzImage
make modules
THEN SU TO ROOT
make modules_install
mount /boot
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/linux-2.6.0-test8-mmx
Edit grub with nano -w /boot/grub/grub.conf

What will the patch-2.6.0-test8-bk1.bz2 be used for?

Kindly advise. Thanks in advance.

B.R.

If your kernel source is in /usr/src/linux, do: "cd /usr/src/linux; patch -p1 -b --dryrun < patch-2.6.0-test8; patch -p1 -b --dryrun < patch-2.6.0-test8-bk1". If you see no informative messages about rejects, remove the "--dry-run" to apply the patches. If it complains about paths, play with the "-p" option: the number is the amount of dirs it strips before trying to apply the patch.

Dunno. You downloaded it. Downloading stuff w/o knowing what it actually does is a hazard to some, a challenge to others :-]
