Ubuntu - Where do we go from here?

I've been using Ubuntu for half a year now, and have been very happy with it. Today I was going to reinstall Ubuntu, since some settings and stuff had gotten kind of messy, but I decided to try something new. I've had this feeling for a while that Ubuntu handles just a little too much behind the scenes without letting me have fun with the system.

I tried installing OpenSUSE, but I can't get the audio to work, and I'm kind of disappointed with the interface. The application menu only displays about eight items! Lots of things here are kind of weirding me out.

Anyway, can someone recommend a distribution that's perhaps based on Debian (I like Synaptic and the general feel of Ubuntu) but a little more flexible than Ubuntu?

How about regular Debian? If you run unstable, you'll get to have some fun with the system. I personally run stable because I'm boring -- and my wife doesn't like me to break the computer! Anyway, stable has rock solid stable stuff, testing is a bit newer, but still as stable (or more so) as Ubuntu, and unstable is pretty up to date (though not bleeding edge like Fedora).

Debian is a great choice. It comes in 3 different versions: Stable/Lenny (totally reliable, like using Ubuntu long-term-support), Testing/Squeeze (relatively stable "rolling release"), and Unstable/Sid (unstable rolling release). I personally use Squeeze on one of my computers with happy results.

Then there is sidux. Sidux is not an official Debian project, but is based on Debian Sid. It is a very cool distro for Ubuntu users who are ready for something more advanced.

I like openmamba but it isn't debian based. Also Mandriva,...

Knoppix is Debian based and the new LXDE Desktop is excellent in my opinion.

sidux is based on Debian sid

LinuxAdvanced I don't know if it is just German or multilingual

Hymera shall be a Debian Derivat

Well, does audio work in root? If so you may just need to add your user to your audio group. "useradd -G audio username" either way, if you really want to learn Linux the next distro I'd go for would be Slackware, at least that's what I switched to from Ubuntu and so have many others, you really learn a lot from it. No dependency tracking though. However, it's certainly not Debian based.
